Principle of Eternity

English: Scroll of the Psalms

Okay, let’s start an argument. What would you say are the two most important words in the Bible?

You’re wrong.

I know because my two words are (probably) different, and I know I’m right.

Yeah, yeah, I know, they’re all important. But the way I figure it, if the Lord took the time to repeat something over and over and over, He must be getting at something.

Now I have to admit, it took me about 40 years to realize this. Which is about how long it took Moses to figure some things out, too, but I digress. The reason I took so long is because I let my brain check out when it should have been sitting up and taking notice. [click to continue…]

Violin 2Hey.  Come on in.  Shut the door behind you.

Ha!  No, you aren’t in trouble.  I just wanted to show you something important, without a lot of distractions.  You doing OK?

So, just curious… how’s your praise life?

Yeah, that’s probably what I would have said, too.

Yes, actually, that is what I wanted to talk about.

I wanted to share an experience that actually happened several years ago, but it totally changed how I approach my relationship with God – particularly praise and worship.

Well, yeah, praise and worship at church with the music and all that.  But more importantly, praising God in my prayer time.  You know that old hymn that says, “Tune my heart to sing Thy praise?”  Yeah, well, the Lord showed me how to do that, and it was pretty life-changing. [click to continue…]

jackson swingIn a slumbering, snoring world, always far away in some other place…
Dreaming of another time like tomorrow or yesterday…
Can you be the one who stays awake
To the rhythms and breathing of the here and now?
Could you stay here in this moment?
Could you rest here in His love?

In a tenacious, tight-fisted tribe of self will run riot…
Demanding life on its own terms as if it were theirs to demand…
Can you be the one who joyfully lets go
And surrenders to the sweetness of His way and truth?
Could you stay here in this moment?
Could you rest here in His love? [click to continue…]

cross

“Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble…”

And the multitudes surrounded Him, and shouted words of praise
As He rode a strong young donkey through the holy city’s gates.
Everything they did exalted Him; they praised Him as their King,
But He never smiled in victory – He never said a thing.
And they all surrounded Him again in just a few short days,
But their cries had lost their ecstasy, their words had lost their praise.
Everyone through sticks and stones at Him, they mocked and cursed His name,
And the man they worshiped as their King hung on a cross in shame.

They all said, “Crucify! I’ll live the way that I want to live.”
They said, “Crucify! The Man asks for more than I can give.
Yes I love Him, but He simply doesn’t fit my plans,
And the only way to do what I want is to crucify this Man.”

faceplantDid a face plant a couple of weeks ago.  On concrete.  It was ugly, and so was I for a few days.

The irony of the situation was that I was bolting from one meeting to another, with a cross-town drive in-between.  And the place I was in a hurry to?

A radio interview about the mental health of people in the ministry.

I wasn’t exactly expecting to have my own tested in the process.  But that’s the price you pay when you’re trying to move at the speed of light on a sidewalk designed for the speed of pedestrians.

For just a minute I thought I was seeing the light of eternity.  Turns out I was just seeing stars.

Aside from the wounds to my forehead, knees, hands and pride, I did learn a few things, such as what an “orbital nerve” is.  Oh, and that there is more than one kind of black eye.

But the most important thing I was reminded of is that my ability to maintain my rhythm and step in this world of the falling is no comparison to God’s ability to hold me, heal me, and shepherd me home.  Regardless of how I may stumble in a temporal world, in the one that matters most, He won’t let me fall. TransformationWe’ve seen and heard it described in myriad ways.  Some are actually in the Bible.  It’s a place where the streets are paved with precious metal.  A place of purity and timelessness.  A place of extraordinary worship and togetherness.  A place where nobody worries about the safety of their children and nobody nervously waits for lab results.

Yes, I’m talking about heaven.  And like the uber-hit song says, I can only imagine what it will be like.  But like you, I have imagined quite a bit… some in earnest, some in fun fantasy before the Lord.

But there was one thing about heaven I had overlooked until a couple of days ago.  I had read and actually preached from this verse many times and passed right over it.  I’ve read this verse at gravesides and church houses countless times and never quite got it.  But I think it’s an important thing to get… [click to continue…]

fireplaceOn this cold December night, when life, relationships and future hope seem more complicated than ever, I pray that that the Father of lights would give you the joy of His presence and the gift of simple happiness throughout the coming year, with the light of every new sunrise.

I pray that he would remind you often of how deeply you are loved, unforgettably engraved in the palm of His hand, steadfastly held by His grace day and night.

I pray that in an age where nothing seems to last, that the One who promised us a home with Him forever  would keep the language and love of forever dancing in your heart and mine as long as you and I have breath. [click to continue…]

Earth Apocalypse“The earth is degenerating these days.  Bribery and corruption abound.  Children no longer mind their parents.  Every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching.”

Wow.  Not sure how the author of that actual little quotation made the logical leap, but leap he did.  Yes, some dishonest people have their pockets lined to serve the interests of a powerful few.  Do you doubt that?

Yes, children have a mind of their own.  That apple didn’t just fall from the tree and knock us on the head this morning.

Yes, everybody seems to want to write a book these days.  Here’s mine.  You can get it for three bucks.  Please buy it.

But are those our “Shocking Signs of the End of the World?”

Hardly.

Anyway, those pearls of wisdom came from an Assyrian tablet, dated 2,800 B.C.E.

How about this one? [click to continue…]

Remember what it was like as a kid to go to sleep on Christmas Eve?

Stockings hung with care, note and snack left near the tree…

Listening with both ears for any sound that resembled, well, anything…

Sneaking a peek out the window to see if you could see, you-know-who…

Trying to go to sleep cause you-know-who can’t you-know-what until you’re fast asleep.

[Cue the choir…]

Then came the morning!  Wow!  Where to start?  All that stuff!

And then… [click to continue…]

Where can I go to get away from your Spirit?
Where can I run to get away from you?
If I go up to heaven, you are there.
If I make my bed in hell, you are there.
If I climb upward on the rays of the morning sun
or land on the most distant shore of the sea where the sun sets,
even there your hand would guide me
and your right hand would hold on to me (Ps 139:7-10, GW)

It’s the fundamental reality – the primal fact on which all else we know is built.  The immortal, invisible, only-wise God, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens, knows no limits of time or space.  For those who have experienced the kindness of His grace, the implications of that are profound.  Simply put, wherever you are, there He already was, is, and shall be.
