Ability

Holding Hands With ChildThings looked bleak for the children in George Muller’s orphanage at Ashley Downs in England.  Muller had built his ministry as a model of how God would provide for him with no specific requests for support.

But on this day, it was time for breakfast, and the cupboards were bare.  There was no food in the kitchen, no money in the bank.  A small girl whose father was a close friend of Muller was visiting in the home.  Muller took her hand and said, “Come and see what our Father will do.”

In the dining room, long tables were set with empty plates and empty mugs.  Muller gathered the children together and prayed, “Dear Father, we thank You for what You are going to give us to eat.”

Immediately, they heard a knock at the door.  [click to continue…]

I enjoy taking pictures the same way an 8-year-old “artist” enjoys sidewalk chalk.  But as long as I can remember, I’ve had a fascination with old cameras. They remind me of some of my own heritage, and they fascinate me as I imagine where they have traveled and what they have captured on film, or lately on disk.  I’ve often said to myself, maybe one day I’d like to add a few to my own old camera collection.

Well.  This weekend the motive, means and opportunity all converged as we travelled to my son’s house for Easter weekend, and I came home with these 23 treasures.  Most of them are in the “junk” category.  But I did pick up a really old (still working) movie projector, a circa-1900 Conley wooden box camera, and a couple of Kodaks from the 1950s. Godtext 2Okay, let’s stretch a little and use some imagination.  Suppose you received that message on your smart phone or email.  Looking beyond the earthly trappings – a church house, your bedroom or office or favorite nature connection – what does the “usual time” and “usual place” for a meeting with God look like?

I daresay for most of us, me included, we become Saints in the Presence of a Busy God.  We pray, we worship, and we listen to a God who’s gettin’ it done. And on our best days, we come in faith that He will actually use us to help execute His plan and that He will get some things done for us.

Anything wrong with that?  Absolutely not.  After all, our God has unlimited power, knowledge and presence.  And He invites us to trust Him to use it and to join Him in effecting His plan – His work.  See if you can relate to some of these “meeting places” with God. [click to continue…]

Storm

We all face days of adversity,
Moments of hostility,
Nights of weeping, uncertainty, regret.
But sometimes those days extend into weeks,
The moments into seasons,
The nights into a relentless deluge with no break in sight.
We all carry a plan for that rainy day,
But what do you do when the storms are raging? [click to continue…]

Peaceful Pond

You’re feeling disappointed or rejected,
Lonely or loveless,
And even though you know better than to believe all that in your head,
You’re too lost in “to-do’s” or “he-did’s” to even recognize your own heart.
Time to come and find your rest.

You’re feeling restless or impatient,
Guilty or angry,
And even though you know you live face-to-grace,
You’re too consumed with how far you have to go to recognize whose job it is get you there.
Time to come and find your rest.

You’re feeling anxious or worried,
Burdened or exhausted,
And even though you know it isn’t your load to carry,
You’re too loaded with responsibilities and cares to recognize that you’ve picked them up again.
Time to come and find your rest. [click to continue…]

(A Conversation…)

Disappointment GuiltYou can’t do that.

What?

You can’t disappoint God.

What do you mean I can’t disappoint God?

Just what I said.

Well I don’t think He’s too pleased!

I didn’t say you can’t displease Him.  That’s a different conversation.  I said you can’t disappoint Him.

Okay, why do you say that?

Because to be able to disappoint Him, you’d have to be able to surprise Him.  And whatever else He is, He is not surprised.

He knew this would happen?

Yep.

He let this happen?

He gave you a choice.  And you made it happen.  But none of it caught Him by surprise.

parenthesisA few months ago I was having a conversation with someone who was going through a recovery process.  He sounded really healthy on the phone – sober in the best sense of the word.  Then he said something really curious about his life.

“I’m so ready to get things back to normal.”

“Normal,” I told him, “was what got you in trouble in the first place.  You’re ‘normal’ is being redefined, and that takes time.  And as much as you want that, you are going to need to give it time to form.”

I was talking to a couple a few weeks after their first baby was born.  I asked how things were going and got a predictable answer.  “We love being parents, but we’re exhausted from lack of sleep,” Mom said.

Then Dad chimed in…  “Yeah, we’re so ready to get back to normal.”

I guess I was a little rude, but I just laughed.  In their face.

“You want what?  Good luck with that.” [click to continue…]

Chihuahua Wearing GlassesIn his book, Living Above the Level of Mediocrity, Chuck Swindoll tells of two young women from Southern California who spent the day doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in Tijuana.  After a successful day of bargain hunting, they returned to their car.  One of the ladies glanced down in the gutter and noticed something squirming, as if in pain.  On closer examination, they saw what appeared to be a dog – a tiny Chihuahua – struggling for its life.  It was breathing heavily, shivering, and barely able to move.  Their hearts went out to the pathetic little animal.  Their compassion wouldn’t let them drive off and leave it there to die.

The friends decided to take it home with them and do their best to nurse it back to health.  Afraid of being stopped and having the little creature detected by border patrol officers, they carefully placed it on some papers among their packages in the trunk of their car.  Within minutes they were back in California and only a couple of hours from home.  One of the women held the sick little Chihuahua the rest of the way. Child Heart

We all were born with the capacity to dream.  To envision a life that could be… that will be… and the pathways to get there.  To imagine a tomorrow that’s better…

Safer…

Happier…

Stronger…

Lovelier.

“Be fruitful and multiply,” He said.  That’s the stuff that dreams are made of.  We dream of fruitfulness.  We dream of abundance.

But life on this side of the Garden sometimes aims our dreams toward the mirror.  Nighttime comes to the soul, and our imagination gets lost in what once was.  Of those we once dreamed with or about, but now for whatever reason are lost to us.  And it hurts like hell. [click to continue…]

Christmas 2004.  I’m pretty sure it was the last time I made the trek to Deer Bluff.  Pictures were the thing this year, and one day Joel wanted to go to Deer Bluff to take some.  It was nice to be back there, this place near the family farm that has always captured my imagination.

At one point I was up on top of the bluff and Joel was down below taking pictures of the initials carved in the stone near the small cave.  Meandering through the volcanic rock and fallen branches, I tripped over a log and fell with a thud on my stomach and shoulder.  I also hit some sort of piece of wood, and cut a couple of plugs out of my fingers.

The fingers were the ugliest, but the shoulder was the greatest concern.  Lying there, I wondered if something had been broken.  Later, my biggest fear was that I had torn my rotator cuff.  Finally, a year later, the MRI showed I had shredded the tendons in my shoulder and yes, I would need surgery.

Awesome.  So that’s what a stumbling block is.  And I was right in the middle of a stumbling zone. [click to continue…]
