I’ve Been Blessed

No one prepared me for how empty the Emptiness could be…
How vain the attempts would be
To fill it with things and times and feelings
That were never designed to satisfy.
It was like dropping feathers into the Grand Canyon…
Always wishing for a little more time and a little less wind.
(A few more feathers would be nice, too.)
But I would never have known the deep satisfaction
That only Your love could provide,
Had I not known the void created by a life
I tried to fill on my own terms.
But I know now I’m loved
With a love that fills deeply and completely.
And in this satisfied life… I’ve been blessed.

No one prepared me for how binding the Bondage could be…
How futile the efforts would be
To free myself from outside control
By trying to control it more.
It was like pulling myself out of a deep hole using only thread…
Always wishing for just a little more time and a few more spools.
(A bit less weight would be nice, too.)
But I would never have known the breathtaking freedom
That only Your love could provide
Had I not known the futility created by a life
I tried to control on my own terms.
But I know now I’m loved
With a love that sets captives free indeed.
And in this liberated life… I’ve been blessed.

No one prepared me for how steep the Mountain could be…
How draining the climb would be
To rise above the sorrows and losses
By trying to protect myself from more sorrow or loss.
It was like swimming the English Channel with a boat anchor…
Always wishing for just a little more time and a less choppy sea.
(A bit more muscle would be nice, too.)
But I would never have known the soul-anchoring comfort
That only Your love could provide
Had I not known the heaviness created by a life
I tried to secure on my own terms.
But I know now I’m loved
With a love that heals a broken heart.
And in this restored life… I’ve been blessed.

No one prepared me for how raging the River could be…
How exhausting the crossing would be
To find the treasures I longed for on the other side
By swimming against the current of my own nature.
It was like reversing the ticking of a clock by wishful thinking…
Always wishing for a little more time and a few more wishes.
(A genie in a bottle would be nice, too.)
But I would never have known the overcoming power
That only Your love could provide
Had I not known the defeat created by a life
I tried to perform on my own terms.
But I know now I’m loved
With a love that crosses over weakness and failure.
And in this bountiful life… I’ve been blessed.

Another loving reminder of the “unseen” beauty and power of His faithful Love. Satisfied. . . liberated. . . restored. . . bountifully blessed. . . ahhh. Living in the “seen,” our hearts need such reminders from time to time.

Thank you, Dr. Wood.
