When I Forget to Breathe

Dead Fish

There’s a certain kind of tired, a certain kind of strain
A certain season of get-it-done-now
When it’s a good thing that some things run on autopilot.
Otherwise, I may just forget to breathe.

But then You specialize in keeping my whole world turning
My light still burning, My heart still yearning –
And after all these years I’m still learning
To trust and know You’re there.

I forget to breathe when morning comes and in the early light
I’m still trying to remember what happened to the late dark…
When quiet prayers are drowned out by noisy deadlines
And even simple blessings feel complicated (can you relate?).

I forget to breathe when I begin measuring happiness by the things
Or situations I can escape rather than the moments I can relish…
When love becomes too much of a discipline
Or something to wedge into a crowded itinerary.

But then You specialize in keeping my whole world turning
My light still burning, My heart still yearning –
And after all these years I’m still learning
To trust and know You’re there.

I forget to breathe when I go on yet another scavenger hunt
For keys or a wallet or my stupidphone…
Only to find it right where I left it of course,
As if You’ve been watching it for me and watching me hurry after it.

I forget to breathe when the darkness of living in a hostile, foreign world
Begins to close in on me and I’m looking for a North Star
Or something – anything
That resembles a light in the darkness.

But then You specialize in keeping my whole world turning
My light still burning, My heart still yearning –
And after all these years I’m still learning
To trust and know You’re there.

I forget to breathe when my heart gets awakened
By a sudden sense of anticipation
Where in a noisy crowd of people or opinions or ideas
Someone or something breaks through with clarity.

I forget to breathe when in a cold world or a cold heart
Somebody lights a fire that actually makes me want to stand by it
Rather than fear it – and Somebody brings a new pulse
To a passion once left for dead.

Yes, You specialize in keeping my whole world turning
My light still burning, My heart still yearning –
And after all these years I’m still learning
To trust and know You’re there.
