What I’m Learning from My Students, Part 3

Welcome back to my front-row seat.  In my work I have the privilege of reading a lot of stuff.  Some of it is forgettable.  Some of it is way-past-profound, either because of the quality of writing or because of the truth it conveys, and I keep a collection of the ones that bowl me over.  You can see previous collections here and here.  Both are quick reads, but profound in what they speak.

Now this collection of seven happens to have a leadership theme, but they also speak to your spiritual life, your courage, and you humility (or lack thereof).

Now… slow down… breathe deeply… and take these in.  You’ll be glad you did.

Practicing spiritual disciplines isn’t an opportunity to mark a devotional scorecard, rather it is an intentional effort to create margin for God to speak into and work in the life of His followers. Without hearing from God it is impossible to follow. Without following it is impossible to lead.

Manipulation was never a tool in the toolbox of our Lord.

As a leader it is sometimes necessary to lead others who disagree with me, who may not necessarily be fond of me, and those who I may feel have wronged me in some way or another.  My relationship with the Lord gives me the knowledge and compassion that I need in order to lead them nonetheless.

…I have been able to better define Christian leadership with glorious simplicity: Leaders are not always successful in the traditional sense. Leaders are not always popular. Leaders often lead simple lives without extravagance. Leaders do the dirty work.

– Mary Sullivan-Trent

In my experience as a minister of God, I have been exposed to a wide range of leadership styles. I have been under the supervision of 10 pastors since I was born. I remember all of them and what I learned from them at an early age….From some, I learned what not do when in ministry/leadership. I have seen firsthand the mess that occurs when a leader forsakes his family. I have smelled the stench of pride when they were called out when they were wrong and refused to admit they were.

I am not going to wait until I am in bulletproof suit before I can walk in the arena. I will not sacrifice my relationships and opportunities because it will be hard to recover. I will not squander my precious time, and turn my back on any gifts because those are unique contributions I made and would like to keep them forever. I will just have to walk into the field or arena with courage and get past my fear.

–Victoria Saygbay

+++++++

A good leader will proves his goodness not by style and attractiveness, but by the visual, habitual and enduring ability to stand for a cause, even when that cause causes one to have to stand alone.
